When Elliot Marshall saw his mother's will had been stolen last month after discovering his mailbox at the Palm Desert Post Office pried open, he wasn't surprised.
Thieves had broken into more than 100 boxes over the past several months at the Portola Avenue location, Marshall said staff members told him a week prior.
To avoid further victimization, Marshall has been picking up his mail at the post office counter until his box is completely replaced and has filed a complaint with the U.S. Postal Service's investigative arm.
He worries that others could become victims of identity theft before the culprit or culprits are apprehended, however, as the Federal Trade Commission estimates that more than 396,000 people have their identities stolen through such incidents every year. Read more at The Desert Sun....
